Missing UCLA Student Found Dead In John Muir Wilderness

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 25-year-old UCLA student who went missing earlier this month has been found dead in Inyo County, authorities said Monday.

Michael David Meyers was last heard from after sending a text to his roommate on Nov. 5 that said he was going to Mount Russell in Inyo National Park. Los Angeles police officials said Meyers was an experienced hiker and climber known for going on excursions alone for days at a time.

Last Wednesday, the LAPD had sought the public's help to find Meyers.

Meyers' body was found Saturday in an area called the John Muir Wilderness, according to the Inyo County coroner's office.

The day before, his belongings were found in a recent avalanche near Mt. Irvine, prompting authorities to request a search dog team and sonar-type equipment.

The cause of death is under investigation.
