Only On 9: Crasher Caught The Garter And Received A Beatdown By Groom During Wild Wedding

RANCHO PALOS VERDES (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities say a wedding crasher at the Los Verdes Golf and County Club caught the garter -- and a beating from the groom and another guest.

CBS2's Amber Lee reported from Los Verdes where a 911 call from Kris Belman, a Los Angeles man described as the crasher, was placed moments after he said he was beaten at the event.

"Hi, I just got jumped," he is heard to say. When asked if his alleged attackers were still there, he replied, "I'm not sure. It's a wedding party. I'm not sure to be honest."

"He was a bloody mess," said Sgt. Donald Rubio with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, "He went to Torrance Memorial where he was given seven stitches."

Before the beating, Belman posed for pictures with the smiling groom -- Jeffrey Gage -- and his new bride.

Deputies said Belman was then escorted out of the wedding and attacked.

Belman was the best man at a wedding held earlier at the facility, according to Rubio. He decided to stick around and continue celebrating.

"He was dressed like he should be there. he was in a tuxedo," said Rubio, "He was smiling with everybody, he was having a great time."

Investigators say Gage, 32, and his friend Phillip Daro, 30, beat Belman after realizing he was a crasher punching him in the face and body and causing a nose injury.

"This guy thinks he's part of the wedding, and he thinks it's okay to catch the garter belt -- which is kinda an important part of the wedding in my eyes," says Rubio.

A wedding planner ultimately asked Belman who he was with and, said Rubio, "he didn't have an answer."

Gage and Daro were arrested on mayhem charges and assault with a deadly weapon charge. Lee reports both men posted a $100,000 bail.

Both Gage and Daro are expected back in court in mid-December. The DA's office said they will decide whether or not to press charges at that time.

Lee reached Belman by phone but he declined to comment on the incident.
