Parents Seek To Avoid Repeat Of Student Brawl At Hawthorne High School

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) Two days after a violent brawl at Hawthorne High School was caught on video, parents Thursday night attended a meeting at the school to discuss how to avoid a repeat of the incident.

It was the second such meeting to be held at the school since the brawl, in which dozens of students fought in the center of campus. Many parents believe the fight was racially motivated.

The school on Thursday heightened security to minimize the risk of another melee. The school day passed without incident, officials said.

Many parents who attended Thursday's meeting acknowledged that it's also their responsibility to keep their kids out of trouble.

"Take care of your kids, make sure your kids respect you, and then they'll come here and they'll have respect," said one father, Luis Rios.

A student's mother echoed that sentiment.

"We need to take responsibility for our kids as well," said Adiel Dawson, a mother.

Another student's mother said she did not allow her son to attend school Thursday for fear of retaliation but left Thursday's meeting feeling better.

"After leaving the meeting, I feel confident everything is going to be fine," said the mother, Jacqueline Williams.

It's unclear how long the extra security will be on campus.

The school district will make an announcement about whether students will be expelled after conducting an investigation.
