Scammers Passed Fake Money At Fundraiser In O.C.

GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — A Garden Grove family found kindness from strangers after being swindled by scammers with counterfeit money.

Finn Murray, 4, has epilepsy. His family tried to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation by having a yard sale and a lemonade stand over the weekend.

But some thieves nearly ruined their efforts by passing $40 worth of counterfeit bills and dashing off.

"It was like printed crooked. The edge was cut on top. I mean, they were bad," Finn's mother, Annie Murray, described the fake money. "And we took it to the police station."

Murray took to social media to share their story and got an outpouring of support.

She said "People came to buy lemonade and cookies, and a lot of people paid over asking price for items or just gave donations."

By the end of the day, the Murrays had raised nearly $1,000, plus the money donated on Finn webpage Fight 4 Finn.

All the proceeds will go to Epilepsy Foundation, which hold its annual walk to end epilepsy on Nov. 22 at the Rose Bowl.

The Murrays also runs another charity called Flocking for Finn in which people get a purple flamingo for donating money.
