Frank Gehry Unveils Pro-Bono Design For Watts Children's Group Campus
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Noted architect Frank Gehry is unveiling a pro-bono design for a Los Angeles children's organization.
Gehry is designing a new campus for the Children's Institute Inc. in Watts, a neighborhood he's been familiar with since taking boxing classes there 46 years ago, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The estimated $35-million project replaced a converted hospital building and consists of boxy, two-story forms united by shining metal roofs and his signature angles. Gehry's works include the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA, as well as a host of buildings abroad.
Gehry called and the design simple and direct, adding that it has "a nice humanity about it."
The Children's Institute provides services for children dealing with poverty and violence.
