Woman Dead, 2 Hospitalized With Severe Burns In El Monte Family Dispute

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A woman was killed in and three others were hospitalized, including a man who was shot by police while holding a knife near another woman's throat, in an apparent family dispute in El Monte Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at about 8 a.m. in the 3900 block of Glen Way and found a man holding a knife to a woman's throat outside the burning structure, according to the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.

"There was a male Asian holding a female Asian at knife point," sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez said. "The victim appeared to have been burned over 90 percent of her body."

El Monte police officers ordered the man to put down the knife and release the woman.

"When the officers saw that the suspect was not going to comply and was holding the knife in a downward direction, right about the victim's clavicle, they figured he was about to stab her, and that's when one of the officers fired one round," Hernandez said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Another man and woman, believed to be in their 50s, were also hospitalized.

After the shooting, another victim was found inside the home.

"At one point, they located a female Asian about 70 who appeared to be deceased," Hernandez said. "She appeared to have sustained a large stab wound in the shoulder area."

That woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the coroner's office. Her name was not immediately released.

Sheriff's officials said another victim, a 48-year-old man, was found down the street suffering from burn injuries. He was also hospitalized.

No officers were injured.
