Fire Crews Respond To Brush Fire Near Fullerton

FULLERTON (CBSLA.com) — Fire crews on Tuesday afternoon responded to a brush fire that burned 80 acres in the hills above La Habra and Fullerton.

The Fullerton Fire Department received a call about the fire at about 4:00 p.m. Shortly after, fire officials said the blaze had spread to 2-3 acres. At 5:00 p.m., the fire had grown to 15 acres.

The fire was first reported on Idaho Street near Risner Way, about a half-mile south of Imperial Highway.

The Fullerton Fire Department called the LA Fire Department for assistance. Four LA Fire Department helicopters, two super scoopers and at least 15 fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

Authorities were suggesting evacuations for La Habra residents on St. Andrews Ave., Riviera Court  and La Costa Court.

Evacuees were being encouraged to go to the La Habra Community Center at 101 W La Habra Boulevard. A Fullerton evacuation center was also set up at 340 West Commonwealth Ave.

Forty homes were evacuated in total.

The LA Fire Department said at 6:20 p.m. that the fire was under control as firefighters continued to monitor for hot spots.

At 7:15 p.m., Fullerton authorities said the fire was 70 percent contained.

Authorities told residents to return to their homes at about 8 p.m.

Fire crews were on the scene as darkness fell establishing a perimeter around the area and providing structure protection.

Full containment is expected by Wednesday morning.
