Santa Ana Teacher, 45, Accused Of Unlawful Sex With 16-Year-Old Student

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities on Friday announced the arrest of a Santa Ana teacher they accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Detectives identified Alvar Albert Gonzalez, 45, of Santa Ana as the teacher.

He was arrested for possessing and producing obscene matter and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

Officials said he was arrested after a joint investigation between the Santa Ana Police Department and the Santa Ana Unified School District Police,

The alleged female victim first met the suspect when she was in his class her freshman year at Santa Ana High School, police said.

In 2013, Gonzalez arranged to meet the teen in his classroom during school lunch breaks. There, Gonzalez allegedly engaged in consensual sexual intercourse with the victim on at least nine occasions. This activity was initially not reported.

In 2014, Gonzalez approached a second female student and kissed her. As a result of that alleged incident, Gonzalez was placed on administrative leave by the Santa Ana Unified School District.

While investigating the kissing incident, Santa Ana Unified District officials said they discovered inappropriate electronic images of youthful looking females on Gonzalez' electronic media storage devices. Detectives identified one of these females by name, located her, and obtained her statement. Further investigation revealed additional images depicting criminal activity between Gonzalez and the victim occurring in 2013.

At this time, detectives continue to investigate the possibility there are additional victims.

The Santa Ana Police Department is requesting members of the public to call detectives if they suspect Gonzalez had inappropriate contact with other students.

Gonzalez has been booked into the Santa Ana Jail.

On Friday, Rick Miller, superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District issued a statement.

The statement read in part, "The Santa Ana Unified School District was notified today that a former teacher from Santa Ana High School was arrested for allegations of criminal misconduct involving a minor. Once the initial investigation and allegations were brought to the attention of the district, the teacher was immediately removed from the classroom, placed on leave, prohibited from all SAUSD campuses, and the matter was referred to the Santa Ana Police Department. This allegation is deeply troubling and disturbing as it is every employee's responsibility to provide a safe environment for our students."
