Authorities Consider Safety Changes After Driver Killed In Malibu Crash
MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday recovered the body of a man who was killed when his car plunged down a cliff in Malibu.
The single-vehicle accident was reported at about 7 p.m. on Malibu Canyon Road, just north of Palm Canyon Lane, California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos said.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the blue BMW sedan, died at the scene.
The vehicle was found at the base of a 200-foot cliff, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Aerial footage showed at least two more rusted cars from previous crashes near the totaled BMW.
According to the California Highway Patrol, since January 2013, there have been 90 accidents along Malibu Canyon Road between Mulholland Highway and the Malibu city limits. Of the 90, two have been fatal.
While some of Malibu Canyon Road has guardrails, this area does not. The Los Angeles Department of Public Works says any fatal accident on a county road triggers an investigation to determine if a change needs to take place to make sure the roadway is safe for motorist
