Dodgers' Turner Promotes Healthy Living At Youth Event

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Dodgers and third basemen Justin Turner hosted the National PLAY Campaign youth event at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.

The event was promoting the importance of keeping an active lifestyle as well as eating healthy every day.

The program had four individual stations teaching kids about the different aspects of nutrition.

Following the seminar about healthy living, the campers were then sent to the Dodgers' batting cage to get a private "Q & A" session with Turner.

"I think it's good for the game of baseball," Turner said. "To try and promote it and try to inspire kids to want to dream about being a baseball player. I guess it gives kids incentives to want to be better, and we're always looking for better players -- the next Mike Trouts and Bryce Harpers... so hopefully there were some superstars in there today that I got the chance to talk to," Turner added.

PLAY stands for Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth, and the group was founded in 2004 in order to promote the awareness of childhood obesity in the US.

Turner reflected on his own childhood, reminiscing how he always wanted to meet professional athletes and ask them questions as a child.

"When I was a kid and I ever had the opportunity to see somebody who I aspired to be, I wanted to be a Major League baseball player, so whenever I heard anyone was around, I'd want to be there to meet them," Turner said.

The Dodgers continue their series with the Reds on Saturday, as Brett Anderson (6-7) takes the mound looking for his seventh win of the 2015 season.

He will face Reds pitcher David Holmberg (1-1), who is pitching in just his fourth major league start this season.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PST.
