Watson Says Farewell As Johnson Maintains Lead At British Open
ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (CBSLA.com) — The start of the second round of play of the British Open was suspended originally due to torrential rain, and the conclusion of the second round was postponed until Saturday due to darkness.
However, most golfers were able to finish their rounds in time, as Dustin Johnson continues to keep hold of the lead, sitting at 10 under par. Johnson, however, was only able to complete 13 holes of his second round, as both he and Jordan Spieth teed off later Friday morning.
Continuing his quest to win his third straight major, Spieth stopped play after 13 holes as well, with a score of 5 under par as he went even on the day thus far.
Danny Willett made a serious push for the lead, shooting three under par Friday, which put him just one stroke back of the the leader at nine under par.
Paul Lawrie and Jason Day are both at eight under par, as they both shot two under in their shortened round Friday night. Day was able to get through 11 holes, while Lawrie finished up the 12th hole when play was postponed for the night.
The players who did not finish their rounds will do so early Saturday morning, at 7 a.m. local time.
Tiger Woods was only able to finish 11 holes, as he is five over par and is not expected to make the cut, which is set at even par. Woods shot one over in his 11 holes, and barring a miraculous final seven holes, Woods' time at St. Andrews will be over after he finishes his second round Saturday morning.
It was an emotional day for Tom Watson, who was playing in his final competitive round of golf at St. Andrews. Watson has won the British Open three times, although he shot eight over par Saturday to finish at 12 over par after two rounds.
Fans gathered near the 18th green as Watson crossed the famous Swilcan Bridge for the last time while he received a loud ovation. Watson put up his worst score ever at St. Andrews, but it didn't seem to matter as the legend crossed the bridge while the fans saluted him for the final time.
Coverage continues on ESPN at 11 p.m. Friday, when players will be called back out to the course to finish the second round.
