Man With A Knife Shot By Officers In Venice

VENICE (CBSLA.com) — A man was shot by LAPD officers Monday after reportedly waving a large knife in the street.

The officer-involved shooting happened on the patio of Groundwork Coffee Co. at 671 Rose Ave. at about 2 p.m., officials said.

An employee said the apparently homeless man appeared to be mentally ill. The unidentified suspect, who had been drinking from a bottle of black liquid that appeared to be a mix of water and cigarettes, sat down but then turned and began vomiting, the employee said.

When a store manager came out to talk to him, the man became unruly and pulled a knife, according to the employee.

The witness said two officers confronted the man, one with a stun gun and the other with a gun. The officer with the stun gun used his weapon first, but it appeared to have no effect, according to the witness.

The officers warned the man to drop the knife, but he refused and walked toward them, at which time the other officer fired two or three rounds, the witness said.

The man is currently in surgery for his wounds.
