Female Pedestrian, 10, Killed In Adelanto Accident

ADELANTO (CBSLA.com)  —  A 10-year-old female pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle in Adelanto Saturday evening.

Deputies from the Victor Valley Sheriff's Station responded to reports of a traffic collision in the area of Hwy 395 and Chamberlaine Way just before 8:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies determined that Michael Wetzel, 38, was traveling north bound in the number two lane on Hwy 395, while the 10-year-old female was crossing eastbound across Hwy 395 with her uncle, 50-year-old Antoine Caton of Adelanto.

Authorities said Wetzel -- a Ridgecrest resident -- was unable to stop his 2004 Toyota Highlander and struck the child with his vehicle. The child was transported to Victor Valley Global Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Region II Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.).

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call Deputy T. James at the Victor Valley Station (760) 552-6800.
