Burglars Steal Mementos Of 88-Year-Old Military Veteran's Service
NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — One local veteran experienced a difficult Memorial Day after burglars made off with priceless mementos of his heroic service.
David Lansing, 88, who spent so many years serving the American people in the U.S. Coast Guard, now can use the public's help, in tracking down whoever broke into the Northridge home and stole the items.
Single father Michael Savage, who says he is best friends with Lansing, was keeping the memorabilia in his home, while Lansing was in and out of the hospital over a seven-month period. Savage's home was burglarized over the weekend.
The home, located near Reseda and Devonshire in Northridge, was ransacked.
The stolen items include photos from Lansing's service and a duffle bag of life savings.
"There's pictures of his mother, his brothers, of his friends, of his war comrades," Savage said. "Everything is gone."
Savage says the Devonshire division of the LAPD is investigating the burglary, and they lifted fingerprints, though it could take time to yield results.
