4 Injured, Including 2 Suspects Who Reportedly Stole Vehicle, Crashed It During Pursuit In Century City

CENTURY CITY (CBSLA.com) — Several people, including two burglary suspects, were injured Thursday after a stolen vehicle crashed into another car during a pursuit in West Los Angeles.

The accident took place around 5:15 a.m. in the 10000 Santa Monica Boulevard in Century City near the Century City Mall, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Shortly before the crash, about a mile and a half away from the scene, a special unit searching for stolen vehicles spotted a Honda that was driving recklessly, according to Lt. John Jenal.

"Hondas are frequently stolen in this area," he said. "Officers were trying to catch up to it to get the license plate."

The two suspects — a 19-year-old man and a woman in her 20s — sped away from police and slammed into another vehicle carrying two women who were heading to work at the mall.

"A multi-thousand pound vehicle going at a high rate of speed like this is like shooting a bullet down the street that can cause significant injury to people, and in this case it did," Jenal said.

All four were taken to a local hospital. Three were expected to survive. The female suspect suffered critical brain injuries.

"This stolen vehicle was used to commit at least one burglary from another vehicle they suspect from what they recovered . . . a backpack containing burglary tools — flashlight, screws manipulated pieces of tools," he explained.

Investigators say they also located belongings that may have been stolen from another victim's vehicle.

An elite investigative unit was brought to the scene to contact witnesses and review security camera video.

Eastbound lanes of Santa Monica Boulevard were shut down during the investigation.
