Deputies Fatally Shoot Man Accused In Deadly Meat Cleaver Attack On Neighbors

SOUTH EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A deputy shot and killed a suspect accused of fatally wounding a man and injuring a woman with a meat cleaver, authorities said.

The violent confrontation unfolded about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday outside a home in the 10400 block of Enloe Street between North Central and North Santa Anita avenues.

Luis Ramirez told CBS2's Jeff Nguyen that his daughter saw the neighbor across the street stabbing the couple next door.

"She was just yelling [inaudible] not to kill them. You know, to let them go. She's the one that called [911]," Ramirez said.

When deputies arrived, they found a woman in the front yard with stab wounds.

Deputies then saw, according to Nguyen, a man with a meat cleaver who they say was stabbing the female victim's husband.

"The deputy ordered the suspect to stop the attack, drop the knife, at which time the suspect aggressed the deputy, moved towards the deputy," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Victor Lewandowski said.

Deputies fired and the suspect fell, but the Sheriff's Department says he was able to get up.

"Came at the deputies again making a statement to the effect of, 'You'll have to kill me.' At that point, a second deputy-involved shooting ensued," the lieutenant said.

Nguyen said the second round of shots killed the suspect.

Deputies say the male victim was dead and the female victim had to be taken to a hospital. She is expected to survive.

The victims names have not been released.

The motive of the stabbing is under investigation.

No deputies were injured in the shootings.
