Angels Fans To Don Sombreros In Guinness World Record Attempt

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — If there's an Angels game, it's likely there's also another world record attempt happening as well.

Fans will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing sombreros will be made at Tuesday night's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game at Angel Stadium.

Prior to the start of the fifth inning, fans will be asked to don sombreros - which will be handed out to everyone entering the stadium for the game against the Seattle Mariners - for five consecutive minutes, according to team officials.

A Guinness official will be on hand to officially certify the new record. It wasn't immediately clear who holds the current record or if one even exists.

A group of 1,008 people wore sombreros at Portland's Cinco de Mayo fiesta in 2012, but the record was not certified by
Guinness. Another record attempt was made Saturday at Portland's Cinco de Mayo fiesta, but it has not been officially certified.

In addition to the sombreros, fans will be treated to Taco Tuesday food offerings, drink specials, games and live entertainment, team officials announced.

Record-breaking attempts are nothing new for Angel games, where world records have been set in each of the past five seasons, including when fans broke the record for the "largest gathering of people wearing costume masks" in 2011 and the largest gathering of people wearing Santa hats last season.

The first pitch for tonight's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
