Cows, Sheep Rescued From Overturned Livestock Trailer On 210 Freeway In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — A truck hauling a 30-foot trailer carrying three sheep and two cows overturned Wednesday on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar, seriously injuring the driver, authorities said.

The trailer overturned around 11 a.m. on the westbound side of the 210 Freeway at Hubbard Street, according to California Highway Patrol.

Animal control workers responded to the scene to help transfer the animals to another vehicle.

Of the animals, the truck was hauling sheep and two pregnant cows.

"We had a vehicle that flipped over. We had a couple of cows and some sheep that were left inside and had to be pulled out," Jay Weiner of the Gentle Barn Foundation said.

"The animals were down. They were pregnant. They were down. They couldn't get up and it was one of those things where we had to act fast to get them up," Armando Navrette of L.A. Animal Services said.

Crews hoisted both cows from the trailer using a large hydraulic boom, an effort that took nearly three hours to complete.

Two freeway lanes were blocked and traffic was snarled for miles after the driver of the truck lost control and skidded up an embankment causing the truck to overturn.

Paramedics took the injured trucker to a hospital in serious condition, Humphrey said. That person was expected to remain in the hospital overnight.

The pregnant cows were transported to an animal shelter for further treatment. One has since died.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
