AP Study: LAX Has 3rd Most Security Breaches Over Past 11 Years

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — LAX is among a number of the nation's busiest airports at which multiple security breaches have been detailed by a report.

The Associated Press performed a detailed review of the largest airports in the country and found that when it comes to airport breaches over the past 11 years, LAX had the third most.

What specifically sparked AP's investigation was a 2014 incident in which a boy hopped a fence at San Jose International Airport and stowed away about a jet by hiding in a wheel well.

"It ranges in the couple hundred thousand dollars to up in the millions, but the cost of an aviation terrorist attack would far exceed any cost to individual airports," an aviation official said.

LAX has had 24 security breaches since 2004. San Francisco's SFO had the most breaches with 37.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are now seeking better technology and more efficient surveillance of airport security.
