Big Waves, Rip Currents Are Concerns At Beaches On Saturday

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — With another warm day on tap Saturday, beaches across the Southland are expected to be busy, but there are concerns about potential dangerous conditions in the water.

KCAL9's Joy Benedict reported Saturday morning big waves and rip currents are forecast, and inexperienced swimmers are being warned to stay close to lifeguard towers and the shore. Swimming with a buddy is also encouraged.

The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement through Sunday afternoon, noting more frequent and longer rip currents as well as elevated surf. With long lulls between the larger waves, the weather service also warns against walking on rocks or jetties near the water's edge. Surf is expected to be 3 to 5 feet in Los Angeles County and 6 to 8 feet further north.

The big waves are anticipated to draw out surfers this weekend, and beaches can also be expected to be busy with the start of spring break for many students.
