Friend Of NBA Star Paul Pierce Fatally Shot In Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) Detectives Monday were investigating a deadly shooting in Hawthorne.

The incident took place around 11 p.m. in the 11900 block of York Avenue, according to police.

Delray Yarbrough, 38, and his sister were reportedly standing on a sidewalk when two men confronted them. One suspect then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Both suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.

Yarbrough was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's detectives were assisting Hawthorne Police in the investigation.

A motive for the shooting was unclear.

"He was my best friend, a very good guy." one of the victim's friends said on Monday. "You can't call a lot of people your best friend."

The victim was a close friend of Washington Wizards star Paul Pierce, who is originally from Inglewood. Pierce took to Twitter on Monday to voice his feelings.

Friends say the victim spent a lot of time volunteering to help the community.

People who were in the area of the crime on Sunday say they did not hear any yelling or arguing; only gunshots. The gunfire was followed by the sound of a car, speeding away.
