Altercation On Skid Row Leads To Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An altercation that occurred on Sunday in downtown Los Angeles on Skid Row prompted a deadly officer-involved shooting.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were sent to the 540 block of South San Pedro Street around 11:36 a.m. for report of a robbery.

When police arrived, they said they observed two men involved in an altercation.

"Upon their arrival," said the LAPD's Sgt. Barry Montgomery, "they made contact with the suspect and during that contact and altercation occurred."

Paramedics transported one patient for treatment at a hospital.

Police said no officers were injured but the suspect was killed.

CBS2's Kara Finnstrom said even hours after the shooting, tensions in the area remained high.

Witness Yolanda Young said the suspect was in a tent arguing with another man and that he then began struggling with officers.

"Next thing I know," said Young, "dude swung on a cop and the cop swung back. And they were hitting on him and then two other cop cars pulled up and they got out of the car and ran over there, and they had three tasers out."

Police could not confirm how many rounds were fired of how many officers were called to the scene.

And investigation is now underway to determine if officers' used excessive force.
