Gardena Residents Demand Answers And Solution For Dirty Tap Water

GARDENA (CBSLA.com) — Residents demanded answers from a local water company Thursday during a meeting that was held to address tap water complaints.

The quality of the water in Gardena has not made any progress, and it looks as though Golden State Water Co. does not have a fast plan to restore residents with a clean solution.

KCAL9's Juan Fernandez attended the meeting, and spoke with residents about the black oily water, which has proved to be nothing but a hassle for residents; especially for one family that suffers from severe allergic reactions to the water in their home.

According to officials, about 110 miles of water main run through Gardena, and some of the pipes date back to 1929.

Fernandez explained that when there are changes in water flow, accumulated materials can be stirred up inside the pipes, which could produce unclean water, even when it runs through a filter.

Golden State Water Company employees addressed the community to update residents about what is being done to improve water quality, such as flushing the water mains.

The company reported they plan to replace five and a half miles of pipe line per year. If they meet that goal, Fernandez estimates it will take 18 to 21 years to replace all of the aging pipes in the city.
