Vehicle Fire Spreads To 2 Homes, Displaces 24 People In El Monte

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A vehicle fire that spread to two El Monte homes Wednesday has displaced two dozen people.

The fire was reported around 3:10 a.m. in the 3900 block of Arned Drive, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

"It's under investigation, but . . . it looks like it started in a vehicle in the driveway and it spread to two structures," Chief Dave Thies said.

No one was home at one of the residences, but four families, totaling 10 adults and 14 children, were living in the other structure.

Officials said the structure consisted of two apartment-style homes and a converted garage.

The fire was declared a knock down at 3:48 a.m.

A woman suffered first and second degree burns to her back as she was trying to escape and was taken to a local hospital.

The American Red Cross has been called in to help those displaced. Officials said two of the units were not damaged and those families will likely be able to return home sometime Wednesday.

A damage estimate was not available.
