Suspect Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting At El Camino College

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — Police Thursday were investigating an officer-involved shooting at El Camino College.

Campus police received a call just before 11:15 a.m. from a suspect claiming to be holding a female hostage inside Parking Lot F at the school located at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. in Torrance.

After two officers responded they discovered no hostages were involved, and an officer-involved shooting occurred after a male suspect produced a fire arm and pointed it at the officers.

The suspect was struck by gunfire, and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

His identity has not yet been released; however, he was described as an 18-year-old white man who is a former student of the college, but not currently enrolled.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department assisted in the investigation to determine whether the officer involved shooting was justified.

KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen spoke with students, who's cars remained cordoned off within the crime scene.

"I'm just waiting," said student Ruth Ake. "All they told me is it's going to be five hours before I can get to my car."

Officers who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

The campus remained open.
