Roof Collapses In Massive Fire At L.A. Business

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters got a quick handle on a massive fire inside a commercial structure in Los Angeles.

The fire at Inner Gardens on West Jefferson Boulevard began just after 7:30 p.m. Friday in the area bordering Culver City and Baldwin Hills.

About 135 firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, which caused flames to shoot high into the sky. According to Sky 9's Stu Mundel, the structure's roof collapsed within 12 minutes.

"It was just incredible. The flames and all the fire engines. These guys do a great job. Those big hoses, you know, the water shooting out. It was pretty incredible," said Sandra Newmark, a witness.

An art supply business adjacent to the garden supply store survived the fire.

A knockdown was declared more than an hour later.

No one was inside the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not known.

"At this time, we have no idea what the cause is," LAFD Assistant Cmdr. Ronnie Villanueva said. "When they showed up on scene, this building was already well-involved so it had time to get itself going."

Arson investigators will look into the cause of the blaze.
