As Many As 50 Sickened By Drug-Laced Rosca De Reyes Bread
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — The number of people sickened by drug-laced Rosca de Reyes bread distributed by a Santa Ana bakery continues to climb.
As many as 50 people have reported getting sick after eating Rosca de Reyes bread, also known as king cake, from Cholula's Bakery in Santa Ana. The Orange County Health Care Agency said that preliminary laboratory results indicated the presence of a synthetic drug.
After eating the bread, which was sold Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, dozens of people reported experiencing dizziness, palpitations and numbness.
Customers say they can't believe someone would intentionally put something dangerous or poisonous in the holiday bread, traditionally eaten on King's Day.
"Why would they? There's no reason for them to do that," Nati Garcia said.
The bakery remains closed as part of the investigation, which has been handed back to the Santa Ana Police Department.
The owner of the bakery has told customers he hopes to reopen the bakery soon but has no idea how the bread became tainted.
