Suspected Hot Prowl Burglar Arrested In South Pasadena

SOUTH PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A 22-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly burglarizing a home and leading officers on a pursuit in South Pasadena.

According to the South Pasadena Police Department, officers were sent around 12:30 a.m. to a home located in the 700 block of Monterey Road, after receiving report of a burglary in progress.

Once on scene, officers safely escorted an alert female homeowner who locked herself in the basement, while her 94-year-old grandmother slept upstairs.

When officers went outside, they encountered a male suspect — later identified as Micah Darrel Everett, of Los Angeles — who allegedly  lead officers on a foot pursuit.

Everett initially avoided arrest as a passing train delayed officers from following him across Monterey Road, where he disappeared into the neighborhood.

Witnesses reported seeing him running, jumping and hiding on several different properties, officers said.

About 30 officers from neighboring police agencies searched for an hour and a half, until they were able to finally locate Everett. Two helicopters also aided in the search.

Everett was taken into custody without incident in the 800 block of Orange Grove Place.

Authorities said Everett was found in possession of burglary tools, stolen property and narcotics paraphernalia. He allegedly changed his clothes, and abandoned his backpack in an attempt to evade arrest.

A preliminary investigation revealed Everett forced entry to a locked and enclosed sun room in the home by cutting the window screen of the door, forcibly removed the window, and proceeded to unlock the door.

Once inside the sun room, he then cut an additional window screen in hope of removing a window to the home, but was unable to.

CBS2's Greg Mills spoke to the alert homeowner whose home was originally broken into.

It's an interview that is Only On 2.

The victim -- who didn't want to appear on camera -- told Mills she hasn't slept since the ordeal began.

"Every noise that I hear and every sound," said the homeowner, "it just scares me and I close my eyes and I see his face."

She said the break-in "scared me to death."

The homeowner said she heard glass breaking in the sun room and knew something was wrong.

Now that Everett has been captured, the homeowner says she hopes to rest a little easier.

"I feel a lot safer," she said, "I feel a lot better knowing that I can hopefully sleep tonight."

The homeowner also told Mills her 94-year-old grandmother slept through the entire ordeal.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact South Pasadena Police Department at (626) 403-7280.
