"There is a high demand for surgical technologists in Los Angeles," said Julio Munoz, an accomplished spine and orthopedic coordinator at Marina Del Rey Hospital. "Surgery centers need technologists with experience, especially in the areas of orthopedic and spine surgery."

How is your hospital helping technologists become more employable?

"Marina Del Rey Hospital has a program with American Career College to train students at the hospital. Additional training for surgical technologists is also offered to allow us to train in multiple areas of surgery, and with different doctors and departments."

What pivotal changes in this vocation do you anticipate in coming years?

"Our roles are expanding and we're taking on more responsibilities. As a result, doctors will expect more from us. Also, new surgical techs entering the field will need a degree."

How does one prepare for a sustainable career?

"A good reputation will help get you far. Doctors will want to work with you if they hear positive recommendations from others. I was an EMT before becoming a surgical tech, so I also think experience in other areas of the health care field is helpful."

What is your message to aspiring surgical technologists?

"Make sure you really want to do it, because not everyone can. Being around blood is part of the job. It's not for the faint of heart. Do your research and find out what it takes to be successful before committing to a career in this field. And make sure you have a grasp on all aspects of the job. There are hazards people don't always consider until they're faced with a situation they weren't ready for."
