WorkSource Center Seeks To Provide Training, Resources For Job Seekers

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —A brand new WorkSource Center to help train students and provide resources for job seekers at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College was unveiled Wednesday by Los Angeles city officials.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and other city officials cut the ribbon on the Vernon-Central WorkSource Center, the first of 17 such facilities that will offer training to as many as 100,000 students.

"This facility is incredible, because people who have already brought themselves to a community college -- they're improving their lives, they're learning the skills that they need, but often times, when they graduate, they're left on their own. Now on the same campus they can find the jobs that they need, but you don't have to be enrolled as a student here," Garcetti said. "In this area of town, where some of the unemployment rates, depending on your age, and what your background is, can be 40, 50 percent. We now have a powerful weapon in our arsenal with this center, right here on campus in South L.A."

The centers will offer technological resources, career advice, education assessment, job training and referrals, as well as resume and interview help.

The city also revamped its employment website, Jobsla.org, to include more jobs.

The program's $36 million will be covered by a federal grant and related funds could amount to as much as $180 million over five years.
