Voters Hit Polls To Decide On Calif. Governor, Several Propositions

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Voters across California hit the polls Tuesday in the midterm elections.

Voting locations are open from 7 a.m. through 8 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County registrar, who predicts this election could produce record low turnout of 46 percent. More than 406,000 mail-in ballots have already been received.

Aside from congressional races, more than 5 million LA County constituents will be asked to choose a new California governor and decide on several key propositions.

Incumbent democratic Governor Jerry Brown is seeking an unprecedented fourth term against republican challenger Neel Kashkari, while Ron Nehring is taking on current Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.

Additionally, voters will elect a new sheriff and a new assessor and decide on the Third District Board of Supervisors race between Sheila Kuehl and Bobby Shriver.

Voters will also make a decision on several key measures.

Proposition 1 would supply $7.5 billion in funding for water quality, supply, treatment and storage projects in the drought-prone state.

Prop 2 would establish a "rainy day" fund for budget stabilization and the repayment of state debts.

Prop 45 requires the Insurance Commissioner's approval before a health insurer can change its rates or anything else affecting the charges associated with health insurance.

Prop 46 mandates the drug and alcohol testing of doctors.

Prop 47 would reduce penalties for "non-serious and nonviolent property and drug crimes" from a felony to a misdemeanor.

And finally, Prop 48 will decide if Indian tribes should be allowed to build casinos on non-reservation land.
