Irvine Man Convicted Of Fatally Shooting Of Father In 2012
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 23-year-old man from Irvine was convicted Wednesday of fatally shooting his 60-year-old father back in 2012.
Jurors convicted Steven Joseph Bruno of one felony count of second-degree murder with a sentencing enhancement in connection with the Aug. 30, 2012 death of his dad.
The victim, identified as Ernest Bruno, was shot around 9 p.m. on that day at his Irvine home, the Orange County district attorney's office said in a written statement.
After the shooting, authorities said the defendant locked his father's body in a bedroom, and took off for Colorado in the victim's car.
The following day, family members contacted authorities after discovering a pool of blood.
Prosecutors said the defendant killed his father in order to take his car and money to visit an out-of-state girlfriend, according to the statement.
Bruno was apprehended on Aug. 31, 2012, during a traffic stop in Colorado.
He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison when he's sentenced on Dec. 18, 2014.
