2-Year-Old Boys Fall From Second Story Window In Del Aire

DEL AIRE (CBSLA.com) — Two toddlers from a set of triplets were hospitalized Tuesday after falling from a second story window.

The accident happened just before 11:50 a.m. at an apartment building near the intersection of 5126 W. El Segundo Boulevard in Hawthorne, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Officials said a bed was propped up against a second story bedroom wall, allowing the 2-year-old boys to climb up to the window that was missing some glass slats and fall through the screen.

A woman driving by witnessed the first boy falling. She stopped her car, ran across traffic and unsuccessfully attempted to catch the second toddler.

The boys fell onto concrete but were "responsive" when fire crews arrived on scene, according to the LASD.

"One fell on his head and the other fell on his feet," a witness said.

Both children were transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in stable condition.

The third child did not fall and was not injured in the incident. The triplets also have another sibling.

Although officials believe the fall appears to be accidental, the boys' parents, who were both home at the time of the accident, were being interviewed by the Department of Children and Family Services and LASD's Special Victim's.

The boys' father, Leonard Jimenez, says he's to blame and he's grateful the children are OK.

"I just collapsed," he said when he saw the boys had fallen.

"Jeffrey, he's got a bruise on his rib and on his thigh and a contusion on his liver. Lucius is fine," Jimenez said, adding that he regrets removing the slats.

"The slats were missing because I took them out because my sons when they played with their little ball, they broke one. And to stop them from getting cut, I took the slides out," he said.

Jimenez plans to move his bed to make sure the children won't be able to reach the window again.
