Trio Of Bears Spotted In Monrovia

MONROVIA (CBSLA.com) — A mother bear and her two cubs were spotted Friday in a resident's back yard.

According to the homeowner, Kate Clarke, the mother bear and her two cubs tend to frequent her yard from time to time.

Officials said the bears were spotted in the 400 block of Granite early Friday morning.

KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen was able to experience the cute family of bears while talking with Clarke in her backyard.

"I heard them out there around 5:30 this morning, which is usual," said Clarke. "They're frequently there."

Clarke said the two bear cubs had climbed down from the tree while the mother bear rested on a branch for quite some time.

The two cubs played with each other and even wrestled one another.

"I thought they had just passed through and gone," Clarke said. "When I went out at eight o'clock they were up playing around in the trees and things. They've been up and down out of the tree ever since."

Nguyen said the mother bear remained calm the entire time and she did not pose as a threat to the crew.

At one point, one of the cubs even walked right up to him, just about five feet away, before running back to it's sibling near the tree.

Clarke said she's so familiar with this family of bears that she leaves them alone when they show up in her yard.

She even keeps the gates open to allow them to come and go as they please.

Nguyen said the mother bear nursed her two cubs in the yard and then they scurried off.
