'Sunshine Kids' Sworn In As Honorary LAPD Officers

UNIVERSAL CITY (CBSLA.com) — Several young cancer patients were given the chance Thursday to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Sunshine Kids Foundation provided a group of 28 patients with star treatment while they were sworn in as honorary Junior Los Angeles Police Department officers.

KCAL9's Amy Johnson spoke with several of the Sunshine Kids who attended from around the U.S. for this unforgettable day.

At the ceremony, each oncology patient was called up one by one to receive their police badge and name card.

"These are kids that are going through very, very tough treatments that need a little break from that," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said.

Saylor Voris, 16, of San Clemente thought it was really cool to be named like a police officer.

"It's like a dream come true," said Voris. "It made you really feel like you were something special. I mean, we've gone through a lot, all of us, and it's just really nice to be a kid again."

The ceremony concluded with an air salute as the group of Sunshine Kids were transported in squad cars through the streets of Hollywood.

They were then greeted by the cast and crew of "Major Crimes" as the group toured the television set and enjoyed a complimentary lunch.

"It means a lot, not just for the kids," said G.W. Bailey, Executive Director of The Sunshine Kids Foundation. "It means a lot that it brings people together with a common cause."

The Sunshine Kids Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that was established in 1982.

Staff members dedicate their time to children with cancer, providing positive group activities and emotional support for those receiving treatment in hospitals across North America.

The group of Sunshine Kids will partake in a trip to Universal Studios Friday and before heading home.
