Water-Main Break Floods Several Echo Park Businesses

ECHO PARK (CBSLA.com) — A water-main break Tuesday morning flooded several businesses in Echo Park.

The 8-inch cast iron pipe, installed in 1908, burst at 3:05 a.m. on Alvarado Street, near Sunset Boulevard, the Department of Water and Power said.

The water flowed downhill, buckling the road and flooding an antique shop, a bargain store and two other businesses.

"Every penny we have is in this store an our blood, sweat and tears," Wanda Ramos, owner of Eric's Architectural Salvage, said.

Water service was interrupted to 25 homes and small businesses.

The DWP expects to have water returned to customers between noon and 2 p.m.

It was unclear what caused the rupture.

The same pipe burst last year and flooded the same businesses, the DWP said.
