Oh, Boy! Woman Gives Birth In Compton Alley

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — A pregnant woman walking in Compton early Sunday thought she'd save time by cutting through an alley, only to find, moments later, that she was going into labor.

Luckily, the unidentified woman found an abandoned couch and took a seat, according to Compton Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Benson.

The woman delivered the baby on her own while screaming for help, prompting people living nearby to call 911, a videographer said.

Her baby boy was born at 3:30 a.m. near Greenleaf and Long Beach boulevards, Benson said.

"There were no apparent problems and there were normal vital signs," Benson said. "I don't think she (the mother) was getting all the care she was supposed to get...She delivered the placenta, too."

Firefighters arrived to find the woman holding her son, who still had the umbilical cord attached.

The woman and baby were taken to a hospital for examination and were said to be in fine condition.
