Man Found Dead Following House Fire In Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com)   —  The body of a homeowner was found Sunday morning following a fire in Hawthorne.

The fire, reported just after 6:15 a.m., was located at a home in the 5000 block of West 135th Street.

Neighbors told CBS2's Joy Benedict the victim was "a nice man" and very much liked by the community.The homeowner was also described as retired, in his 60s.

One of the man's neighbors told Benedict he saw smoke coming from the home and immediately called 911.

Authorities told Benedict the victim was declared dead when they arrived.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials on the scene pointed to possible pack-rat conditions.

The man's identity was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
