Police: Man Shot By Officer At Long Beach City College

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A man was wounded Thursday in a shooting involving an officer on the campus of Long Beach City College.

The shooting happened at the Pacific Coast Highway location about 5:30 p.m.

The man was wounded, authorities said, then taken into custody.

The Press-Telegram reported the man is 26 and said his distraught mother was at the scene.

Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9, said that even after being shot, "the suspect reportedly fought with officers."

No officers were injured, Mundel said.

KCAL9's Bobby Kaple picked up the story Thursday evening.

Police told him there was a shootout between the man and Long Beach police in a classroom doorway. Authorities said the man shot at police first.

Authorities told Kaple that the incident started when officers saw two people arguing on a sidewalk on campus.

As they approached, they said the man ran off.

Officers chased him into a classroom, believed to be an auto shop.

School President Eloy Oakley told reporters the incident rattled some.

"It's always a very scary thing when you hear about a suspect and a weapon," Oakley said. "But fortunately, and gratefully so, no one else was injured. The officer did his job and apprehended the suspect."

Police said there were 6-10 people in the classroom at the time of the shooting, but no one else was struck.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing.
