COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — The 30-year-old Torrance woman accused of fatally stabbing her three young daughters entered a not guilty plea Thursday.

Carol Coronado faces three felony counts of murder in the deaths of her children, ages 3, 2 and 2 months, as well as one count of attempted murder stemming from Coronado’s alleged knife attack on her mother.

Cameras were not allowed inside the Compton courtroom, where KCAL9’s Randy Paige reports the defendant’s husband, Rudy Coronado, was crying as his wife entered the plea.

Rudy Coronado spoke to the media after the hearing.

“I just want to thank everybody for their support,” he said.

Defense attorney Stephen Allen stopped short of saying Coronado forgives his wife, but suggested postpartum depression may have been a factor.

“He loves her and supports her and knows that this isn’t her – that there is something else that caused this. And we’ll get to the bottom of it at some point,” Allen said.

“We want to draw attention to the issue of postpartum depression and psychosis. I think that more needs to be done to diagnose this type of disorder,” he continued.

The District Attorney has not decided if they will seek the death penalty.

Coronado is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
