IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A 52-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday night after he attempted to cross the southbound 405 Freeway in Irvine.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. just north of Lake Forest Drive.

The man was pronounced dead nearly 15 minutes later.

The female driver was not injured and was cooperating with authorities.

The southbound 405 was backed up for several miles.
