WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Start the New Year with a bang by undergoing a makeover that’s about revitalizing your body from the inside out.
CBS2’s Melanie Woodrow linked up tired, stressed-out mother Natasha Messina with wellness expert Robyn Youkilis.
First, the duo visited Aura Yoga, a studio where colored lights are used to balance energy systems in the body.
“We want to try to create an experience with the yoga room,” Jake Ferree, a yoga instructor, said.
While Messina was new to yoga, she felt the positive effects several postures later.
Next, Messina and Youkilis visited cold-pressed juice company Juice Served Here in West Hollywood.
“No hangovers behind these shots,” Retail Director Logan Horsley said.
Natasha tried different kinds of shots, including B-12 and a “hot shot” made of lemon, ginger, jalapeño, and essential oil of oregano.
“The reaction is one of the best things about selling these shots,” Horsley said.
“It gave me a little kick almost,” Messina said.
Messina then moved from the bar to the kitchen, where Youkilis made her a massaged kale salad.
Carrots, cucumbers and kale “detoxifies your liver,” Youkilis said.
Lemon juice, olive oil and avocado are “great for skin and hair and nails,” Youkilis said.
“It’s really, really good,” Messina said.
The final stop was at House of Intuition, where Messina had a spiritual healing session with Naha Armady.
Armady placed crystals on Messina’s body.
“We affirm that all energetic centers have been opened, attuned and are functioning properly,” Armady said.
“I’ve had so much weight on me, I let it all out,” Messina said.
Messina finally had to say goodbye to Youkilis, but had a hearty hello for 2014.
“I think it’ll be a good year,” she said.
Youkilis’ Kale Salad Recipe:
About 4 generous cups washed, de-stemmed and chopped kale (one large bunch)
1 tbsp olive oil
Juice of ½ to 1 lemon (depending how juicy your lemon is)
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cucumber, chopped or grated
1 carrot, grated
1 cup sprouts, sunflower or alfalfa
½ bunch mint, chopped or torn
Prep cucumber, carrot and mint and set aside. Sprinkle cayenne pepper, sea salt and pepper over kale in a large bowl. Drizzle olive oil and lemon juice. Cube avocado flesh and add to kale mixture (I like to add ½ of the avocado to massage and then add the remaining half later to enjoy in pieces in the salad).
With clean hands, “massage” the kale so that all of the oil and avocado are coating it and it begins to wilt (the avocado should be completely mashed into the leaves). Wash hands and add additional veggies and mint and mix well. Taste and add any additional salt or pepper or lemon juice. Enjoy!
