Prosecution Rests In Kelly Thomas Case

SANTA ANA (AP) — Prosecutors have wrapped up their case against two former police officers who are on trial in the death of a mentally ill, homeless man.

Orange County prosecutors rested their case Wednesday on the eighth day of trial for the ex-Fullerton officers who are accused of killing 37-year-old Kelly Thomas.

Defense attorneys will begin their case Thursday.

The trial is expected to last into January.

Former Officer Manuel Ramos has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the July 2011 death.

Former Cpl. Jay Cicinelli has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force.

Thomas died five days after a violent confrontation with officers who were responding to reports of a man trying to break into cars at a transit center.
