TEMPLE (CBSLA.com) — A college student has died after jumping off some rocks into a pool of water while hiking, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The accident happened Monday near Hermit Flats in the Angeles National Forest.

A group of 13 college students were hiking in the area when a six of them decided to jump into a pool of water from nearby rocks, officials said.

The victim, who was the last to jump, appeared to be unconscious following the plunge.

“Several people from the group pulled the victim from the water and began CPR. Others in the group attempted to use their cellular telephones to call for help,” Sgt. Rich Pena said.

The unidentified victim was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
