VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say two cats and at least two pet birds died in an apartment fire in Van Nuys.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said the fire at the three-story, 94-unit complex was reported about 8:45 a.m. Sunday.

Humphrey said it took firefighters less than 20 minutes to extinguish the fire in the 15000 block of Sherman Way.

According to Humphrey, the fire was confined to one unit on the third floor.

However, residents from 30 units were forced to evacuate, he said.

"Thankfully, all of the occupants quickly escaped without injury," Humphrey told KNX 1070.

The fire caused about $60,000 in damage, according to officials.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
