Fullerton Fire Dept. Swaps Uniforms For Pink T-Shirts In Cancer Campaign

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A brave 18-year-old woman is inspiring firefighters in Fullerton to raise awareness for cancer research by swapping out their uniforms for pink T-shirts.

CBS2's Michele Gile reports the month-long wardrobe swap is in honor of Caitlin Lyle - a teen diagnosed with leukemia weeks before going to college - and marks the second year of the Together We Can Axe Out Cancer Campaign.

"Our chief, Chief Knabe, has allowed to us wear the pink shirts as our uniform all month - so all of the shifts we are wearing the pink shirts. And it is just to signify cancer awareness to the community," Capt. Joe Frilot said.

Firefighters are also selling the shirts. So far they've raised $8,000, all of which they say will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Caitlin's name.

Caitlin's mother, Kilty Lyle, is overjoyed by the response.

"The outreach is amazing for us," she said.
