LA Kings Return To Camp After Short Summer

EL SEGUNDO (AP) — After two long seasons and one short summer, the Los Angeles Kings are ready to get back to work.

The Kings went through their first workouts of training camp Thursday, adding several new pieces to the core of a team with a Stanley Cup title and two conference finals appearances in the last two seasons.

Los Angeles had plenty of time to recover from its championship run thanks to the lockout, but this offseason was compressed into three months after the Kings' loss to eventual champion Chicago.

The Kings returned healthy, with even defenseman Willie Mitchell looking good after a 15-month absence for two knee surgeries.

Newcomers Jeff Schultz, Matt Frattin and Daniel Carcillo are working to find roles. There's also a healthy competition among goalie Jonathan Quick's prospective backups.
