Torrance Police Fire Upon Female Suspect, 43, Before She Drives Car Into Channel

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities in Torrance say a 43-year-old female suspect was the target of an officer-involved shooting after the woman allegedly rammed her car into a police vehicle.

The unidentified woman was originally wanted in Palos Verdes Estates for reckless driving, said Torrance Police.

At approximately 1:35 a.m. Thursday, Torrance Police said they were asked to help in the pursuit of the woman.

They said the Corona resident was driving eastbound on Torrance Boulevard when officers joined the chase.

Authorities allege the woman refused to stop, continued to drive at a high rate of speed and ran through several red lights before crashing into a chain link fence at a Torrance Boulevard dead end, just east of Jamison in the city of Carson.

Police say when they attempted to take the woman into custody, she put her car in reverse and collided with an occupied police unit behind her.

At this time, the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was not hit by gunfire, said officials.

While fleeing, the woman reportedly crashed through two chain link fences and then plunged 25-feet down Dominguez Channel.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Torrance Police.
