LAPD Looking For Hit And Run Driver Who Struck And Killed Man At Valet Stand

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA.com) — LAPD is on the search for a hit and run driver who struck and killed a young man at a valet stand early Sunday.

Ernesto Melendez, 23, was celebrating his girlfriend's work promotion when the driver plowed into him as he was getting into his car on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks.

Melendez' girlfriend, Cynthia Lemus, rushed over to her boyfriend after the accident occurred. She was with him as he lay dying.

"I know they're gonna catch you anyway so you might as well just turn yourself in," Lemus said.

Melendez' family is no stranger to the tragedies of a hit and run. Years ago, his mother had been killed by a hit and run driver.

The family reportedly needs help with funeral expenses, but more than anything they say they are looking for justice.

Friends and family continue to gather at the spot of the crime, where a memorial has been placed.
