Suspect Arrested In Deadly Gardena Hit-And-Run

GARDENA (CBSLA.com) – Police in Gardena Wednesday announced the arrest of a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run last month.

Authorities said they arrested Vanessa Maria Yanez, 22, and charged her with vehicular manslaughter, perjury, filing a false police report and felony hit-and-run.

Officials said Yanez struck Jesse Dotson on the evening of June 26, about 10 p.m.

Dotson was riding his bicycle eastbound on El Segundo Boulevard near Vermont when police say he was hit by Yanez. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

He was declared dead three days later.

Acting on a tip on the same day Dotson died, police located and recovered the suspect's vehicle about a mile from where the accident occurred.

The Gardena Police Department's Traffic Division is asking for any additional witnesses to come forward. They're asking anyone with information to call investigator Matt Hassoldt at (310) 217-6189.
